Barbarossa: Beyond the Edge
Peter & Sons has pushed its Barbarossa series into new waters with Barbarossa Beyond the Edge, keeping the familiar DoubleMax “doubling multiplier trail” but adding a fresh twist: a new mystery cannonball designed to give the multiplier chain a helpful shove forward when it lands.
The setup is classic Barbarossa: Captain Barbarossa and crew sail beyond the last known waters into a riskier patch of ocean filled with sirens and sea serpents. The game opens in a rocky cove on a calm, sunny day, then shifts into a darker mood when free spins are running. Visually, it’s aggressive once the cannonballs start flying, though it doesn’t aim to be the most captivating-looking entry in the series.
On the reels, Beyond the Edge uses a 5-reel, 3-row layout with 243 ways to win. It’s billed as very highly volatile, with stakes ranging from $/€0.20 to $/€30, and an RTP of 96.44%. Low-value symbols include a bottle, fish, a webbed hand, a pearl, and a compass, paying 0.25x to 0.3x the bet for 5-of-a-kind. Above them sit five pirate character symbols worth 0.5x to 1x the bet for 5-of-a-kind. Wilds substitute for all regular pay symbols to help build combinations.
Like the other DoubleMax-style Barbarossa games, the action comes from wins that trigger cascades. When a win hits, the winning symbols disappear, a wild lands in one of the winning positions, and new symbols drop to fill the gaps; cascades continue until there are no more wins. Wilds don’t stick around forever, either, disappearing when they’re part of a win. Each consecutive winning cascade pushes the multiplier chain forward: it starts at x1 and doubles with each winning cascade step, but in the base game it resets back to x1 when the spin ends.
The “special cannonball” layer shows up through mystery balls with values of x3, x5, or x10 that can appear during a cascade. When one lands, it multiplies the previous winning multiplier step to become the new active multiplier, and it also upgrades all remaining higher multipliers shown on the chain by the same amount. In a game where building and preserving momentum is the whole point, this is the extra tool Beyond the Edge brings to the series’ core blueprint.
Free spins remain the main destination if you like watching multipliers build over time. Hit 3 scatters in the base game and you’ll get 7 free spins, plus 2 extra spins for each additional scatter. During free spins, the multiplier doesn’t reset until the feature finishes, but the round can’t be retriggered. There are also feature buys: a regular 7 free spins buy costs 110x the bet; a buy for 7, 9, or 11 random free spins costs 220x the stake; and a 330x option buys 7, 9, or 11 (random) Power Free Spins with more special balls and more wins. A Golden Bet is available too, increasing the stake by 50% to double the chance of triggering free spins.
In terms of what this release means for returning players, Beyond the Edge largely sticks to the same playbook as prior Barbarossa entries, described as basically Barbarossa Dragon Empire with an extra cannonball and lower winning potential than that predecessor. Even so, the ceiling is still substantial at 30,000x the bet, leaving plenty of room for a big result if the cascades chain together and the multiplier trail cooperates.

Player angle: If you track slot series releases, this is a clear “same engine, small upgrade” entry where the new mystery cannonball could meaningfully affect how often the multiplier trail gets a mid-spin boost. For the current rankings, see our real money casinos guide.
